Our recent article about the best budget-friendly digital cameras started a great discussion on Facebook about more ideas on saving money. The tips were so great that we decided to share them here. This is what you had to say:
Lisa: I bought a Nikon Coolpix from Walmart. $299. Great camera. Frugal or not you have to buy the camera that suits you and your needs or it was a waste of money. I did lots of research before I bought mine.
Tabatha: Go with a price you are not willing to go over because the sales people will always try to sell you something more expensive. Do your homework online before you go and know the price you want to spend and don’t budge! My husband and I even went as far as knowing what camera we wanted before we even walked through the stores doors! …If you are only printing photos for scrapbooking which are generally 4×6, 8-10 MP are plenty. If you are printing larger pictures, you’ll need more MP’s.
Becky: Love my Kodak Easy Share! Got it at Walmart online during “black friday” sale for I think 65.00! Takes great pix – 12 mega pixel!
Mick: Ebay, refurbished Pentax. $30 2+ years ago. I also prefer the wafer rechargeable battery, seems like we longer life from them than the AA recharges. Remember, shooting digital is much cheaper than shooting film.
Karen: We have a 2-3 year old Olympus 8mp camera and my daugher just recently bought a new Kodak 12mp camera ($45 at Staples) and the pics are a million times better…the difference in clarity, whether small or large printed pics, is amazing.
Jorge: If you’re going to buy a camera wait till they go on clearance. Target is always switching out their cameras every three or four months and they sell them for sometimes up to 75% of their original price. Great way to get a nice camera for an even better price.
Malia: Frugal shoppers can score great deals on ebay.
Essential1: I was thinking about buying another digital camera but the I thought, my daughter has a pretty decent digital camera, I can use hers if I need to. Why waste money an another one when the one we have works just fine.
Great advice, everyone! It’s so great to hear that people are figuring out smart ways to save money. I’m sure this will help some people find (and afford!) the frugal digital camera they want.
So, in summary:
- Know what you want.
- Research online.
- Don’t spend money on a digital camera that won’t meet your needs.
- Check eBay, clearance sales, refurbished cameras, Black Friday sales, Target, Amazon.com and Walmart.
- Get enough megapixels to make you happy, but you don’t always need the max.
- If you’re happy with the one you have, keep it.
