Hey, everyone! It’s Fern. I was at the grocery store the other day picking up a few things (Frank can’t live without his Moon Pies), when a light bulb flickered on above my head. I realized that the grocery store is ground zero in the battle to save money, and I want to give you some of our Frugal Family tips to save when you shop.
The first and most important way to save money at the grocery store is to do something that your mom has been telling you to do since you were just a wee tyke: Eat your leftovers! Seriously, eating your leftovers instantly turns one meal into two, and cuts the amount you spend per meal in half. If you’re having trouble convincing the kids to eat the leftover chicken from last night, just add some beans, wrap it in a tortilla, and you’ve just turned leftover chicken night into burrito night!
Next, don’t be afraid to buy the store brand items. Why on earth would you want to pay nearly twice as much for the exact same item just because it’s a familiar brand? Shopping for groceries isn’t fashion, and the name on the tag doesn’t matter; it’s the price on the tag and the ability to feed your family that’s important.
Finally, pay attention to the per-unit prices. You might be able to save a lot of money by buying the bigger container, a different brand, or even two smaller containers instead. But be careful: if you buy 10 lbs. of apples for eight dollars instead of the 5 lb. bag for five dollars, are you really saving money if half of your 10 lb. bag goes bad and rots? Not at all!
