Frank here. Let’s look at some seriously fun ways to entertain yourself or your family without spending too much. Check out our list; then add your own in the comments!

Play games. Cheap or free card games or board games can provide hours of fun.

Play outside. Go to a park and play hide-and-go-seek, fly kites or throw a ball. It’s healthy and fun for the whole family.

Put on a play. Get creative and pull out those old clothes. Your in-home-entertainment might be silly (a great way to laugh) or serious (a great way to learn).

Reminisce. Watch family home videos or dig up old photo albums.

Enjoy a movie. Instead of paying tons for the latest blockbuster, wait a little while until it’s in your local “dollar theater.” Or rent a movie. Redbox locations offer new releases for just $1/night – much cheaper than heading to the theater.

Eat. Cook something at home or go on a picnic. Making the meal can be a great activity. And since you have total control over the preparation, you can keep things healthy.

Enjoy a show. Check out a community college or high-school musical, play or recital. Support local talent at bargain ticket prices.

Talk. Sometimes it’s great to just get together and discuss how your day went.

Start a hobby. Some hobbies can be expensive, but they don’t have to be. There are all sorts of fun hobbies–and some (like gardening) can actually save you money.

What else would you add?

Read a good book! Go to the library once a week or so where the whole family can check out books appropriate for their age and interest. You can also check out movies and CDs there…for free!

Clean- you can never have your house clean enough. Cleaning makes the day go by really fast and most of the time it doesnt cost anything to do it!

Spend time with your pets. Find a new game to play with them or take them somewhere new that they haven’t been before. While the expense of pets can add up, they can entertain you for hours (and you them) for free.

Visit art galleries or studios. My city has a monthly “gallery crawl” with refreshments and meet-&-greet of the artists.

Many libraries also offer free classes, lectures, and/or workshops.
