Bonjour, Frugal followers! It’s Fern, and today I’d like to talk about inexpensive ways to clothe your kids. My kids are pretty good in this regard, as they understand the value of saving (Frannie actually wrote her own blog post for Frugal Fashionistas), but I know that not all parents are that lucky, and so I’d like to provide you with a few tips for clothing the kids for cheap.

The most obvious way to save money on your kids’ clothes is to practice the art of the hand-me-down. When one kid grows out of it, it’s the next child’s turn. Obviously, this shouldn’t apply to things like socks and underwear, but if a shirt or a pair of jeans is in perfectly wearable condition, why should you go out and fork over the cash for a replacement? It just doesn’t make good financial sense.

Second, don’t waste money on expensive clothing for anyone under the age of five. Maybe a nice dress for the girl or something presentable for family occasions for the boy, but that’s it. Babies, infants and toddlers have no idea what fashion is and they don’t care whether they are wearing a two dollar pair of sweats or a fifty dollar pair of baby Gap jeans. So why go with the latter? This is about saving.

Finally, take advantage of consignment sales. These are just like huge garage sales for clothing, and often times they are tailored for small children and expectant mothers in need of maternity wear. The deals at these things are enough to make you blink and rub your eyes in disbelief. Just hop on the internet and look up when the next consignment sale in your area will be. Cheap and easy. Two things that any Frugal Follower loves.

So save some money, save the discussions about their wardrobes until they hit adolescence, and save yourself some peace of mind by following Frugal tips like these. Feel free to chime in at any time! See you tomorrow!
