MovieCameraIconHi everyone! Fran here, and if your family’s like mine, they LOVE to go to the movies. We each have our favorite kinds of movies (mine are love stories!) but we try to go as a family as often as possible without breaking our budget. With a family of four, it can be really expensive—after buying tickets, candy and soda you could be spending over $100! Here are some ideas on how to still have fun at the movies without digging too deep in your pocket.

One easy way of saving money is going early in the day, to a matinee. On average, movie tickets can cost $3 less when choosing an early show. Our family likes to go to early because it’s less crowded— so we can find great seats and save money. By doing this we save about $12 on our tickets, and we have the rest of the day to spend together.

Another option is to look for a local dollar movie theater. These theaters may not show the most recent releases, but they may have movies you may have wanted to see but hadn’t had the chance to when it was a new release. Starplex Cinemas, www.starplexcinemas.com (not an ad), is a well known dollar theater and they have locations in California, Texas, Oklahoma and other states. Their movies are a $1 on Tuesdays and $2 on other days. Check them out online to find the one nearest to you!

Renting movies is also a great way of saving money. You may not want to deal with crowded lines, an audience that insists on talking through the movie, or spending several dollars on snacks at a theater. Renting movies can be a comfortable, relaxing and in-expensive option to enjoy a flick. There are several options for renting movies as well. You can rent from your local rental store, order a movie through your cable company or hit the Redbox DVD vending location (usually near a local grocery store). These options allow you to enjoy a movie in the comfort of your home. You can even make a party of it by having a potluck movie night. Or make it a date night with that special someone.

Remember there are always low cost ways to have fun with the family. See you at the movies!

Hulu.com has a ton of TV shows (and several movies) that you can legally watch for free. It’s an “official” source, run by entertainment companies like NBC.
