Frank says: Freddie asked to write this post explaining his ideas, as a teenager, about frugal family activities.
Wadup, y’all? Freddie Frugal here, kickin’ it old school and bringing back frugality like stacks of wax. Let’s take a look at a really quick and easy way to save some cash and spend some time with the kids. You see that? Saving and spending in the same sentence. I never thought I’d see the day.
You may have heard about board game night, but with a lot of kids these days, our attention spans are just far too short to be sufficiently entertained by something that doesn’t have flashing lights and/or loud explosions.
So how do we combat this generational gap and lack of attention? Get outside! As long as we’re indoors, we’re going to want to watch T.V., play videogames, or anything else that is mind-numbing and doesn’t require any actual human interaction.
Take us on a bike ride around the neighborhood! First of all, we need the exercise. And as much as we don’t always admit it, we like being outside! We are, after all, just kids.
Beyond the bike ride, you can organize a neighborhood sports league. Family baseball or softball games in the summer, flag football in the fall and basketball in the spring. Inexpensive, easy, and the equipment is a one-time purchase that’s durable and can be reused over and over again. If it cold where you live, bundle up to go sledding or hiking. So get out there, folks! Freddie Frugal: Out!
Frank again: What do you think, folks? Are outdoor activities a better option for the older kids? What does your family do?
Don’t forget to play The Frugality Game today!

My son (age 22) and I are both avid hikers so we generally hit the mountains on Saturday mornings when we’re both free. My daughter (age 20), however, prefers to do gym work and classes. I have a harder time finding outdoor things to do with her; she says if she wants to eat bugs she’ll go hiking with me.
its the perfect b’day present!
gee freddie,
you’re so hospitable.;/
