Guess what, everybody? Super Bowl Sunday is approaching faster that a bullet pass from Peyton Manning out of the Shotgun formation. Yes, the biggest party day of the year for a great deal of Americans is here once again, and if you’re hosting this year, that probably means that food and refreshments are on you like a cornerback on a wide-receiver running a hook and go! Sorry about the all the gridiron terminology, but c’mon, it’s the Super Bowl!

So how can we host the mamma-jamma of Super Bowl party extravaganzas without straying from our Frugal Philosophy like a left tackle on the wrong blocking assignment? As simple as one, two, three and out!

First off: Food. We need it. We love it. And on Super Bowl Sunday, we can’t get enough of it. It’s like Thanksgiving for jocks! So what’s the easiest way to save money on the food this year? Make it yourself! Don’t waste a bunch of cash on those ridiculously expensive, pre-made platters when you could simply buy the fruits and vegetables, dice them yourself at home, and save that extra money. Buying hotdogs and hamburgers in bulk at a Costco or Smart and Final type location is always good if you plan on having a large amount of guests over as well.

Next, the refreshments. Now let’s not kid ourselves, Super Bowl Sunday is a party day, and alcoholic beverages are on the list for many. But they’re so expensive! Well here’s a tip from a friend of the Frugal’s that can cut your refreshment expenses dramatically and have you well within your beverage budget at the end of the day. Recycle! Yes, at the beginning of the football season, set apart a few, special large bins just for your football related beverages. By the end of the season, and just in time for Super Sunday, you should have yourself a fairly large amount of recyclables to return, which can then be spent on the beverages for your bash! Win-win!

Finally, the entertainment. While the game and, of course, the commercials are the entertainment for the day, it may be difficult to truly enjoy them if you’re watching the game with thirty people on a twenty inch television screen. So how do we remedy such a situation without going out and spending $1500 on huge flat-screen, plasma, high-definition, 1080p, cable ready, surround sound equipped behemoth? Easily! You can rent a projector with all the necessary equipment included for as low as $99 for the day. You would, of course, need to plan this in advance, though, as they would probably sell out or go up in price the closer to the big game it got. But if you took a few small donations from all the numerous party-goers, it shouldn’t be anything that you and your wallet can’t tackle!

So avoid the yellow penalty flags for “holding” a bad Super Bowl party and use this opportunity throw a “touchdown” of a great party. Sorry! Couldn’t help myself! Remember to share your favorite ideas with everyone, too! Have fun and be safe!
