I would do so but only at night when no one is looking. Inspite of the savings, no one really looks good digging inside a trash can. Maybe i'm a little vain but I don't want anyone seeing me digging through trash.

I have asked my neighbors for their unwanted newspapers when there was a great free coupon. (I don't see such great coupons these days - they seem to be "buy one get one free" not just straight-up free.)
Dumpsters are actually not so bad. I get a lot of food there.

I would take coupons and other good items out of my neighbor's trash if I didn't feel like a thief doing it. It's not like I'm stealing? Right? It's garbage and I'm saving the environment by rescuing items that will end up in the dump. We have recycle bins for our trash so it would be pretty easy to find newspapers on Sunday night if I could just get past that feeling that someone is going to have me arrest!

I used to do this all the time at my apartments; pick coupons and magazines out of the trash bin next to the mail box area. Aside from saving a lot of money this was also a cue to me to remove my mailing address from things (like magazines) before I threw them out. Unfortunately, people were abusing the bin meant for paper-only trash and the apartment management had to remove it.
